This is how your profile appears to people who just surf the SL website. Note that they can retweet and post your profile on their Facebook pages. Even blog sites give you the choice of allowing the buttons to be visible and used by surfers.

The Q Linden announcement of the new web-based profile system can be found here. Be aware there isn’t much useful information there. We’ll just have to wait for Torley to find a positive spin on it.

Here are my first impressions:

If under “Privacy Settings” you uncheck I want my profile to be available on the web people using V2 will not be able to see your profile at all. Those using V1 and TPV’s based on it will see the old viewer-based profile.

Checking a person’s profile used to be a way to get to know them. Anyone here ever profile pick surf to find new destinations? A bit more difficult now.

I don’t like that anyone can tweet or FB my profile, thus putting me out there for everyone in the world. This really bothers me a lot. This may be the reason I deselect the web-based profile. I would like it to be my choice. Perhaps under Privacy settings could be an “Allow retweet, etc.” option. Maybe just a “Show this button” option.

I know that this was also available on the old viewer-based website profile, but it is more evident on the web-based profile. By the way, you still get the viewer-based profile if you type in the resident name in SEARCH on the Second Life website.

Also keep in mind that Facebook doesn’t currently legally allow non-real identities. So you either make up a false identity using your Second Life name for Facebook and risk losing that account at the whim of whoever happens to review your account that day or you “out” your real identity, thus allowing your mom, your high school best friend, your co-workers and your kids to know about your Second Life identity. If I were the kind of person who would make up an identity for fun for, say, gaming or virtual worlds, and then make a Facebook page for that identity so that I could keep my real life and my hobby life separate, then that might not be a problem. Of course, none of us would do something contractually illegal like that and I’m sure that Linden Labs doesn’t mean to encourage contractually illegal activity by offering the service. I’m sure Linden Labs knows that all of us are just panting to reveal our real life information to anyone in Second Life and across the world-wide web.

Not all the REAL LIFE, PICK and CLASSIFIED pictures seem to have made it to the web-based profile site. Not sure I like having to copy my inworld pictures to my hard drive and then reload them to my profile.

MY NOTES has disappeared from your personal profile tab in SLV2. In the new web-based profile it appears as “PRIVATE NOTES” on other people’s profile. If you’ve used that area for notes about or for yourself, time to back it up to a notecard.

There may be information about the new web-based profiles somewhere. However, if you go to the Second Life Wiki and in the Search field type “Profile” you will get information about the viewer-based profile tab as it appears in Second Life 1.23.5 and Third-Party Viewers based on SLV1.

Q Linden did say “try it out, and keep the feedback coming!” Maybe they will listen.

Make a texture changing prim rosette you can use over and over and a basic choker style necklace with endless possibilites. We’ll build it large enough for easy manipulation and size it to fit.

Two more avatars from the Historical Archives of Second Life

A long, long time ago in a galaxy …. oops, wrong story

Many years ago in the dawn of Second Life, the earliest avatars and costumes were created by Lindens. New residents were provided with these items in their Linden Library Inventory, usually in the Clothing folder.

As Torley Linden says in his notecard this is “stuff that used to be in your Inventory’s Library folder but was removed because it was replaced by newer content or otherwise deprecated.”

Sadly, much of this early experimental content is forever lost. It is presented here out of historical interest for your enjoyment and wonderment at how far we’ve come.

I've never been to San Francisco or Golden Gate Park in real life OR Second Life

While the Facebook Places application may be a good marketing idea for publicize your business or to share fun places to visit it is a bad idea for personal privacy.

You can choose ti post “Hey, I’m at Golden Gate Park and it’s great” to your friends rather than let the world know. Using Places mean that anyone who looks at that site’s Facebook page, ANYONE IN THE WORLD, can see who is there. They don’t even have to be one of your friends to know where you are.

While the application current works mostly if you update Facebook from your phone, there is the option that anyone you’ve friended can reveal your location without you knowing or permitting it.

The settings to prevent this are located in your ACCOUNT>PRIVACY SETTINGS

Choose Your Privacy Settings > Customize settings
Things I share > Places I check in to > CUSTOM > EDIT > THESE PEOPLE > ONLY ME
Things I share > Include me in “People Here Now” after I check in: Visible to friends and people checked in nearby (See an example)) > Enabled (UNCHECK THIS)

(This option means that anyone else can post your location)
Things others share > Friends can check me in to Places > DISABLED

This simple to use HUD allows you to Tweet directly to your Twitter account from within Second Life.

You can rename it and reshape it to fit your personal style. Sorry, the script and textures are no mod/no copy.

SECURITY CONCERNS: Don’t worry, the information goes nowhere but to your personal Twitter account. Because this information isn’t stored, you will need to login each time you attach your Twitter Tweeter or relog into Second Life. The Twitter Tweeter remembers your information as long as its attached or worn.

1) Simply wear the Tweetie Bird Twitter Tweeter. It attachs to the bottom center of your screen, but of course you can use any attachment point.  You can even wear it directly on your avatar if you want!

2) At the prompt, type your Twitter Account username and password in chat.

          /11 mytwittername:mytwitterpassword

3) To send a Tweet, type /10 and your Twitter message.
         
          /10 Now I’m Tweeting from #SL thanks to my new Twitter Tweeter!
         
4) You can turn your Twitter Tweeter off and on by just touching the icon. No need to relog on to Twitter because the Twitter Tweeter remembers your information as long as its attached or worn.

This 7-prim build is going to focus on some building techniques to simplify alignment and on texturing details that make a difference to the overall appearance and quality of your build.

This is not a beginner’s class. It is a Journeyman Class.

You need to be familiar with Camera Controls and the Edit Menu, know how to shift-copy/ctrl-Z, how to select a specific prim face for texturing and how to focus on project.

Also, this class is scheduled to last 90 minutes, because we’ll be doing some experimenting.
